These days there aren’t enough being done to stop this problem. The only things being done is that some people are starting to protest, while others don’t even know about this problem. We should be informing other people about this problem. There should be more protests against chocolate companies like Hershey’s. Unless more people are informed about this problem. There should also be a fine for companies that use cheap labor because that is unfair for the slaves. On the graph to the right you can see that Africa is the  poorest region from the show. On the lower left there is another graph that shows the poorest places on Earth. These places are like, the most extreme  places of poverty because the inhabitants of that region have to live on less than a dollar a day. Here in America we have snacks that cost only a dollar. I bet that the African slaves live on even less than a dollar. With that dollar they have to buy food and maybe some clean water of save for new clothes. They go through this every day. There are some sites that help with the hunger like free rice. Back to slavery, so with this extreme poverty the kids try and get their family money for food and clothing. Most of the time the children don’t get the money they need or any money for their 8 hour work shifts that all day they spend working with huge knifes and risking their lives.

Here in America there are a couple of organizations against unfair chocolate. The cliffs bar is a fair chocolate bar and it tastes delicious too. Another activists group is the taste of slavery team. They research chocolate slavery and what is being done about it. One way you can help stop chocolate slavery is to purchase chocolate from companies who make fair and slave-free chocolate. Don’t be surprised when you see the higher price on the slave free chocolate. The only reason the slave free chocolate is more expensive is because the workers are paid a fair amount of money to harvest the cocoa beans used in this chocolate. I think that there should be more done about this problem and that chocolate companies like Hershey’s should be forced to stop using this cheap labor source. This is a quick way to stop this problem, but it would only be a temporary thing because there will still be companies using child labor and they would just say that there is no slavery used to make their chocolate.

First of all if you don’t care about this problem you are not very nice, but you can still read this. The consequences of chocolate and slavery are very bad. If we don’t stop the African population will fall because of the highly deadly job of collecting cocoa beans. Using machetes, working deadly machines and the chance of dying of hunger and exhaustion are all daily risks being tacked by the slaves to make little money for their family if they can send it to their money. Since the deaths of the African slaves will grow, that gives chocolate companies another reason to purchase more slaves. Once almost all the male population is dead from working on plantations, Hershey’s will start to use females as slaves. To the right you can see an African slave approximately 12-16 years old. on his back you can see marks from being whipped by his owner. Slaves are whipped when they do a bad job for the day or do something to anger their owner. They are tied with ropes and beat brutally. The abuse in these farms is another reason why this should be stopped. This is another reason slaves die is because of infection in their wounds. Infection can happen even faster in Africa because they don’t have the medical technology to cure infections as much as we in America do. The overall message I am trying to say here is that we should stop chocolate slavery or we will have barley any population in Africa.

Chocolate- the nation’s most famous “comfort” food. The word “chocolate” comes from the Aztecs of Mexico, and is derived from the Nahuatl word “xocolatl” which is a combination of the words, “xocolli”, which means “bitter”, and “atl”, which is fancy talk for “water”. Many people believe that there is this magical place where this wonderful chocolate is made. Everyone there wears silk clothes and fancy thing, but that isn’t true. The real way that magical chocolate came to be is from a place where all the people have barley any clothes. Most of this happens in Africa. Slave traders are trafficking boys ranging from the age of 12 to 16 from their home countries and are selling them to cocoa farmers in Cote d’Ivoire(the cocoa capital). They work on plantations across the country, harvesting the cocoa beans all day and night, under terrible conditions. Most of the slaves come from Mali, where the slave traders hang around bus stations looking for children that are alone or are begging for food. They lure the kids to travel to Cote d’Ivoire with them, and then they sell the children to farmers in need of cheap labor.during the night the slaves are locked- up in tiny cages made of steel. They can be seriously injured because they work with machetes.

This terrible thing is happening because of the constant demand for chocolate in America. Many chocolate manufacturers have created products from chocolate bars to fudge, hoping to attract more consumers with each creation. Both The Hershey Company and Mars have become the largest chocolate companies in the world. Chocolate companies like this often use child slavery to harvest their beans. Once the cocoa beans have been harvested by the children the beans are shipped to the U.S and are manufactured by companies like Hershey’s in factories. These factories are run by overworked, underpaid workers. From these factories the chocolate is packed into wrappers that are hard to recycle. Slavery in chocolate is a horrible corrupted way to make chocolate.
